As Ducks fans, we know that this team isn’t going to win a cup with this core. They are either too young, too bald or just not good enough. Dare I say mediocre. This Ducks squad is a team in need of a rebuild and a retool. Here are the reasons why they should commit to a full rebuild.
Not enough top tier talent
Long-time Face of the Franchise, Ryan Getzlaf is in his mid-30s, he isn’t going to get better sadly, only worse. He is arguably the only thing close to a ”top tier” talent the Ducks have, with 20 points in 27 games this season Getzlaf has shown he is a great leader for the younger guys and that he still may be able to hold his own. Meanwhile, the other Ducks that are considered core skaters aren’t good enough to call stars. The only two you can make arguments for their ”starhood” is Swedish forward Rickard Rakell and his fellow countryman Hampus Lindholm. All of this aside the Ducks do have the best goaltender on the planet in John Gibson. The lack of top tier talent on this roster for the future is worrying. Trevor Zegras and Brayden Tracey project to be solid players but only Zegras has that star potential out of the Ducks prospects. Maybe a rebuild can fix that.
Strong 2020 NHL Draft
Stockpiling on picks for the upcoming draft would be huge for the Ducks as they can draft a star forward to go with Zegras and with the later first-round picks you can take defensemen to buff up the D-Core a bit. Players on the Ducks roster that can yield first-round picks are Josh Manson, Cam Fowler, Adam Henrique, Jakob Silfverberg, and the aforementioned Rakell, Lindholm, Getzlaf, and Gibson. No, trading all of them would be a terrible idea but, trading a couple wouldn’t be horrible. Henrique and Manson seem like the odd men out in this situation as the leagues need for right-handed defensemen is on the rise and everyone needs a good center. Currently, the Ducks sit at 25tg in the league which would grant them the 6th overall pick in the upcoming draft. Barring some lottery luck, some prospects available at that draft position may be Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, and Henrix Lapierre. Out of those 4, Lucas Raymond seems like the skater that would help the Ducks the most and seems like the most likely pick as Ducks GM Bob Murray loves his swedes.
