Next up in the Scouting Reports, we have Ja Morant, the 6-3 Point Guard of Murray State. Morant came into the year not seen as a draft prospect and is now set to go 2nd overall Thursday night. Morant averaged 24.5 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 10 APG, 1.8 SPG, and a terrible 5.2 turnovers per game. Morant led Murray State to a 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament, beating Marquette in the 1st Round, before losing to Florida St. in the Round of 32. Ja was also 1st Team All-American and became the first player in NCAA history to average 20 PPG and 10 APG.
Strengths: great play-maker… dynamic athlete… ideal size for PG… great passer… great ball handler… fearless… elite speed and explosiveness… great defensive upside… good shooting form… good one-on-one moves… makes teammates better… good game manager and offense runner… plays well in the big moments…
Weaknesses: inconsistent 3 pointer (36% last season, 33% his freshman season)… overaggressive on offense… forces the issue on drives… too many turnovers… needs to run pick-and-roll better… didin’t play a lot of high level competition, but did play well when he did.
Overall, I think Ja will have a solid NBA career, Whether he goes #2 to Memphis or slips in the draft. I think he has the potential to average 25 PPG and 10 APG if he can develop a 3 point shot. He reminds me of a Westbrook, but better on offense, but we’ll have to see what happens once he faces “real” competition.
